Each year hundreds of leopard sharks gather along La Jolla Shores to mate and feed. The best time to spot them is August and September on a clear, sunny day. This video was shot mid August and although the water clarity wasn’t the best, we were still able to spot a ton of leopard sharks, guitar fish, bat rays, and sting rays along the beach.
Leopard sharks are not dangerous and feed on small invertebrates and fish. The biggest concern for snorkelers looking to view the sharks are stingrays, so be sure to do the stingray shuffle when walking out to avoid stepping on one.
This area is part of the La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve where all marine life is protected so no fishing here.
