RAF Burtonwood opened in 1940 as a typical RAF Maintenance Unit together with a MAP operated Aircraft Repair Depot (ARD) sharing the common airfield, just west of Warrington in Lancashire. Prior to Pearl Harbor the USAAC were scouting for bases to operate from, knowing that war was inevitable. This is the story of how it grew as No 37 MU, the ARD was renamed the Burtonwood Repair Depot (BRD). Its location near Liverpool docks made it ideal as the major support base for the USAAC (later USAAF) and this story illustrates its growth until is was fisrt occupied by the Americans in May 1940 and totally handed over to them in October 1942. The story continues in the subsequent talk covering the years 1942 - 1946 also available on this channel.
