Spinal canal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal, which is the passageway through which the spinal cord runs. Spinal canal stenosis can occur in any part of the spine, but it is most common in the lumbar (lower back) and cervical (neck) regions.

Causes

The most common cause of spinal canal stenosis is age-related degeneration. As you age, the discs between your vertebrae can shrink and lose their elasticity. This can lead to the narrowing of the spinal canal.

Other causes of spinal canal stenosis include:

Herniated disc
Bone spurs
Spinal tumors
Arthritis
Injuries to the spine
Symptoms

The symptoms of spinal canal stenosis can vary depending on the location of the narrowing and the severity of the condition. Common symptoms include:

Pain in the back, neck, or arms and legs
Numbness or tingling in the hands and feet
Muscle weakness
Stiffness
Loss of balance and coordination
Diagnosis

To diagnose spinal canal stenosis, your doctor will perform a physical exam and ask about your medical history. They may also order imaging tests, such as an X-ray, MRI, or CT scan, to get a better look at your spine.

Treatment

Treatment for spinal canal stenosis depends on the severity of your symptoms and the underlying cause. Non-surgical treatments include:

Physical therapy: Physical therapy can help to strengthen the muscles around your spine and improve your flexibility and range of motion.
Medication: Over-the-counter or prescription pain relievers can help to reduce pain and inflammation.
Corticosteroids: Corticosteroids can be injected into the spine to reduce inflammation and swelling.
If non-surgical treatments are not effective, your doctor may recommend surgery to widen the spinal canal and relieve pressure on the spinal cord.

Prevention

There is no way to completely prevent spinal canal stenosis, but there are things you can do to reduce your risk, such as:

Maintaining a healthy weight
Exercising regularly
Avoiding repetitive lifting and bending
Using proper lifting techniques when you do need to lift heavy objects
