Elk Grove residents speak out on proposed homeless shelter

Elk Grove residents shared mixed reactions during a public meeting at District 56 focused on a proposed homeless shelter. City leaders hosted the meeting to gather community input on potential locations, including sites on East Stockton Boulevard and Dwight Road. Some residents praised the city’s transparency and supported a shelter integrated into the community, while others raised concerns about safety, drug use, and how future city leaders might enforce oversight.

City Manager Jason Behrmann said the shelter would be referral-only and designed to meet Elk Grove’s local needs, not serve the broader Sacramento region. Despite disagreements, many attendees said they want meaningful solutions to homelessness. The Elk Grove City Council is scheduled to discuss next steps on February 11, with additional community meetings planned and online public comments opening later this week.
