Toric geometry is a fascinating topic where torus symmetry can be used to study many algebraic varieties completely combinatorially. In this video, the first of three, we look at the projective plane afresh, from the point of view of torus symmetry. This serves as a teaser to toric geometry. We show how using a natural torus action on the projective plane, we can arrive at the standard affine patches which give the projective plane its manifold structure. We also show how to encode the algebra of regular functions on these patches combinatorially by looking at the lattice corresponding to the character group of the torus.
