Tonight we return to one of the most mysterious and powerful moments in the book of Genesis—Jacob wrestling through the night with an unknown “man.” For centuries, interpreters have debated who this figure was: a man, an angel, or God Himself. But Scripture does not leave us guessing.
Using Genesis 28, 31, and 32—and the crucial commentary found in Hosea 12—we will see that the One who confronted Jacob, renamed him, blessed him, and left him limping was no mere creature. He is the same One who appeared at Bethel, received Jacob’s vow, and identifies Himself as “the God of Bethel.” Hosea makes it unmistakably clear: the Angel Jacob wrestled is Yahweh, the Lord of hosts.
We will explore:
• Why Jacob’s new name—Israel—could only come from God Himself
• How Hosea 12 unites “the angel,” “the man,” and “God” into one divine Person
• Why Jewish interpretations struggle with Hosea’s clarity
• What this encounter reveals about the pre-incarnate Christ
• How God uses struggle to transform His people
Join us as we see the continuity between Genesis and the prophets and discover how Jacob’s long night points us to the One who still confronts, breaks, blesses, and renames His people.
