(18 May 2016) German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited the European Astronaut Centre in Cologne on Wednesday when Germany's first commander of the International Space Station was announced.
Professor Jan Woerner, the ESA Director General, said that Alexander Gerst would become Germany's first commander of the International Space Station on his next mission in 2018.
Gerst will be the second European Space Agency astronaut in charge of the orbital outpost, after Belgian pilot Frank De Winne, reflecting Europe's growing interest in space.
