Punjab’s Minister for Minority Affairs Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora condemned India’s decision to bar Sikh jathas from travelling to Pakistan for Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Prakash Purab, calling it a violation of religious freedom that has deeply upset the Sikh diaspora. In this video, he said Pakistan continues to keep the Kartarpur corridor open and is prepared daily to welcome pilgrims, while India has shut its side since May. Arora accused New Delhi of creating obstacles for Sikhs wishing to visit holy shrines such as Nankana Sahib, Kartarpur and Panja Sahib, despite a bilateral protocol allowing annual pilgrimages. He said the move hurts not only Indian Sikhs but also global devotees who transit through India to reach Pakistan.
The minister argued that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government is pursuing a Hindutva-driven agenda that sidelines minorities, citing past violence against Sikhs, Muslims and Christians. By contrast, he said Pakistan ensures security, accommodation, health facilities and cultural programmes for yatris, with around 60,000 devotees attending last year’s celebrations. Arora warned that India’s restrictions risk depriving elderly Sikhs of a once-in-a-lifetime wish to visit sacred sites, while portraying Pakistan unfairly as unsafe. He urged the United Nations and human rights groups to intervene, insisting Pakistan remains committed to inclusivity, minority rights and interfaith harmony.
