Amid growing strategic and geopolitical uncertainty, Europe is grappling with the notion of its strategic autonomy. For Europe’s partners in Asia, the concept is also becoming increasingly salient as the world enters an era of structural transformation.
Shifting balances of power and the deepening US-China rivalry, notably with profound uncertainty about Washington’s long-term commitment to allies in both economic and security terms, as well as the increasing use of economic coercion on the part of partners and adversaries alike are pressing Asian countries to consider how best to secure their future. This conference seeks to better understand how the concept of strategic autonomy is understood and being operationalized in different ways by key Asian partners, and to further explore how an upending of the international trade architecture and growing supply chain insecurity are fueling this broader conceptual debate.
