J-Bay | 24 Frames

Guys, in this video I filmed a really fun day at J-Bay. I decided to shoot the whole session at 24 frames per second, the same frame rate used in most Hollywood cinematic films.

I usually film at 50fps in case I need slow-motion shots, but while editing this one I really fell in love with the look and feel of 24fps. I did experiment with a few slow-mo techniques you can use when shooting 24fps, but in the end I wasn’t happy with the results, so I kept it clean and natural.

I’m still working through a few focus challenges since moving across to the Sony system. In over 20 years of filming and photography I’ve never really struggled with focus, so it’s definitely a learning curve — but I’m confident I’ll have it fully dialled in soon.

My tripod has also been through the mill and is due for an upgrade. I’ve never really had to rely on high-end tripod features before — things like ultra-smooth fluid heads, quick setup, and fast levelling — but it’s something I’m actively working towards. A proper professional setup comes at a price, usually somewhere between R50k – R80k, so one step at a time.
