On May 24th, 2022, CTrail introduced M-8 electric MU's to Shore Line East service, replacing the diesel-hauled push-pull trains that had served the line since it's inception. Sixteen cars were pulled from Metro-North service, and grouped into four sets of 4-car trains for SLE service between New Haven and New London. Three sets of equipment are needed to cover scheduled service with the fourth as a spare.
The trains retain their Metro-North markings, but their third rail shoes were removed for use on SLE due to a physical obstruction along Amtrak's Shore Line that can not be remedied. Thus, if equipment needs to be swapped back into Metro-North service, the third rail shoes would have to be re-installed.
This video features the three sets of equipment in operation on May 27th at Clinton, Madison, and New Haven-State Street stations, showing all SLE trips between 5:00am and 11:00am at the three locations combined.
Oh yeah, and a few Amtrak trains made it into the show too!
Trainsets operating on this day (starting at the New Haven end of the train) were:
Set #1: 9362-9363, 9364-9365
Set #2: 9330-9331, 9104-9105
Set #3: 9251-9250, 9511-9510
