Thousands protest in Vienna over right-wing Academic Ball

(26 Jan 2018) Around 8,000 people gathered in Vienna on Friday for a peaceful protest against an event organised by the right wing, populist Freedom Party of Austria, which is now a minority partner in the Austrian coalition government.
The "Academics Ball" has members of traditionally right and far-right students' organisations meeting at a venue inside the capital's Hofburg palace - which is also the the official residence of the country's left wing president, Alexander Van der Bellen.
While the demonstrators claim that the ball is a networking centre for Europe's ultra right groups, the Freedom Party's leader Heinz Christian Strache - now the Austrian Vice Chancellor - insisted the motto of the event was "against racism and anti-Semitism."
