Vandas are a natural group of over 80 species in the Orchid Kingdom and that includes many hybrids, which originate in an area from India and South East Asia, to New Guinea and Australia. They are monopodial plants which grow from a single tip as a recurring rhizome.
They can grow up to one metre tall, and need warm humid temperature to flourish. As plants ,they produce flashy and spectacular flowers in many colours and can be the high point of many orchid collection.
Although most Vandas are epiphytic, a few terrestrial Vandas do exist and are grown in very porous soil with stakes for the plants as they attain the heights of five feet or more. Otherwise, most plants are grown in open boxes or unpotted, and are hung from trees in a humid environment which enhances their growth. Note that they flourish in a warm environment, and have no cold tolerance; always keep them warm.
This video was made using clips from the RHS collection in Wisley, UK, and plants in Trinidad.
This channel will illustrate my deep interest in flora, including plants I grow at home; and my many journeys around the world enjoying gardens and habitats. Winston in London
