Dunure Castle and Port Patrick I The start of The Southern Upland Way

Oh flippin 'eck, it's a windy one! As our new glamorous voiceover assistant says, we were so windswept in this one that our audio did suffer, so there's a bit more music than usual.

But never fear! We've braved the wind, the rugged roads, and even the ocassional pigeon remains to bring you the very best of castles - well, that's how Val tells it anyway! Dunure Castle has stood tall since at least the 13th century, and although there's not much left of it, it's got a tremendous atmosphere. Well worth a look.

Strolling around Dunure's scenic harbour had us feeling a little starstruck too, because as Val discovered, this is where Outlander was filmed! But it's not just for the art buffs, because this really is a spectacular place.

As we transition over to Portpatrick, we see the roads get narrower and narrower before we end up caught in a very tight spot indeed. Nothing our van master Dave can't tackle though! More concerning are the hordes of sheep we're surrounded by along the way - not that we're saying anything baaaad about them!

We have a quick stop off and a van snack at the very remote Killantringan Bay.

At Portpatrick we see the anchor that starts the Southern Upland Way, which sounds like quite the undertaking indeed - how many miles was that!? On a note closer to home, shout out to Val - friend of Val! - for the recommendation.

We take a moment to appreciate the incredible waves the lap at Scotland's edge here, and then it's back in the van. There's still time for a very slobbery biscuit for Tess, then it's on the road we go!
