Rare Redub of Wallace & Gromit A Grand Day Out From 1998 (Lost Media)

Here’s a rare redub of the iconic stop motion animated short, Wallace & Gromit, A Grand Day Out, featuring Peter Sallis reprising his role as Wallace. In 1998, Aardman Animation and the University of Oxford collaborated with each other by making versions of the first three Wallace & Gromit shorts meant to help foreign students learn English. Which not only Peter Sallis re-recorded his lines, but he also changed them up a bit in order for foreign students to understand the dialogue easier.

This decision was made because the Oxford University loved The Wrong Trousers short as Robert Maidment, the Oxford English Video Publishing manager, said: "The Wrong Trousers is a unique film which we believe is ideal for adapting to language teaching because of its gripping storyline, vivid characters and technical brilliance." But aren't some of Wallace's finest sayings, just a touch too colloquial, eh chuck? "This has allowed us to add a few extra elements to make it more of a language teaching aid. We are certainly hopeful of seeing many thousands of copies from Thailand to Brazil."

These versions of the shorts were never sold in retail stores, only available in schools and universities. Copies of the redubs were first printed on VHS in 1998 and DVD copies would later be printed in 2004. Despite tons of copies were made, the redubs of the shorts have barely been easily accessible online and not much talked about either, making them one of the most obscure and rarest pieces of Wallace and Gromit media of all time. These versions were also never released as a bonus feature on DVD and Blu-ray releases of the shorts, as only standalone VHS and DVD prints of the redubs were made. The DVD copies are pretty rare to find online and VHS copies are even more rare as listings of them are pretty scarce to comeby.

Which these versions of the shorts were lost for over a decade, which wouldn’t be until on August 5, 2009, DVD rips of a Grand Day Out and The Wrong Trousers were uploaded on the Russian site VK.com by user Total English, the first short’s redub would also be uploaded again on April 21, 2012, on Dallymotion by user kinkept. A DVD rip of the A Close Shave redub was also uploaded on on vk.com by user Bridge to Languages on August 28, 2010, in 240p and another upload would be on the site in 360p by user English for Beginners on July 5, 2014. Clips of the Wrong Trousers redub were also uploaded on Dailymotion by user English For All on December 31, 2017. A DVD rip of the A Close Shave redub was also uploaded again on archive.org by user masons random world on December 29, 2024. On January 7, 2025, high quality dvd rips of A Grand Day Out and The Wrong Trousers redubs were posted on archive.org by user Will C Wilson. Which after over 26 years, the redubs of the shorts can now be more easily accessible online to the public.

Which here’s an upload of the A Grand Day Out redub, with the audio only as I can’t show footage of this version due to copyright and also can’t share the link either but it shouldn’t be that hard to find. So anyway enjoy this extremely rare piece of Wallace & Gromit history.
