Leo Sowerby was dubbed the “Dean of American Church Musicians” but it is often forgotten that, “between the wars,” his instrumental music was extremely popular on the concert stage as well. Published in 1932, the Symphony in G Major is not only one of Sowerby's most monumental organ works, but it is also one of the most important American concert organ pieces published before the second World War. The final movement Passacaglia was actually composed before the other two movements and had the benefit of several pre-publication performances with subsequent editing and improvement. Its eight-measure theme is worked through thirty-three variations. A compositional tour de force, the Passacaglia displays Sowerby's great mastery of one of his favorite and frequently-used forms.
Mark Dwyer is the Organist and Choirmaster at The Church of the Advent, Boston, where he directs one of the finest professional choirs in the United States in an extensive repertoire of sacred polyphony to works of the present day. He is acclaimed as both a concert and liturgical organist and has played both in this country and the UK.
