E' un pesce di acqua dolce che deriva dalla famiglia dei Cichlidae, ciclidi, proviene dalle zone amazzoniche (sud America) ed abita acque calme e ricche di vegetazione. E' un pesce con corpo molto compresso ai fianchi e molto alto, pinna anale e dorsale lunghe e sorrette da ampi aggi, pinne ventrali filiformi e pinna caudale a delta. La gamma dei colori va dal grigio , argento, perlato,giallo, arancione, bianco, strisce nere e bianche, e dipende dalla varietà della specie (Wild, Silver, Zebra, White, Marble, Gold Marble, Black, koi, Albino, Leopard, Veil, Halfblack, Perla, Philippine Blue, Gost, Chocolate, Clown, Smokey). Lo Pterophyllum Scalare è un pesce da branco quindi consigliamo di averne un numero superiore o uguale a 5 esemplari, è molto compatibile con altre specie e quindi in acquari di comuntià, ad eccezione dei neon e dei botia. Necessita di un adeguato spazio relativo alle sue dimensioni quindi consigliamo un allestimento ricco di vegetazione ma disposto ai lati in modo da lasciargli spazio di nuotata. Non c è molta differenza tra maschio e femmina, possiamo notare una gobba sopra il capo più pronunciata ed un organo riproduttore a forma di cono nel maschio; mentre invece nella femmina assenza di gobba ed un organo genitale a forma di tronco di cono. E' un pesce oviparo quindi la fecondazione è esterna, la coppia inizierà a preparare il luogo di deposizione delle uova (generalmente superfici lisce come arredi o vetri) successivamente avverrà la fecondazione del maschio, la schiusura sarà dopo circa 3 giorni e si dovrà provvedere alla separazione degli avannotti. Se volete attuare una riproduzione vi consigliamo di aumentare la temperatura dell' acqua. Lo scalare è un pesce onnivoro quindi si consiglia di dare granuli, scaglie, insetti, artemie napulii, e larve di zanzara.
