Romania's Best Kept Secret (I did not expect this) | Exploring the medieval city of Iasi, Romania 🇷🇴

Iasi, Romania (pronounced "Yash") is a somewhat forgotten city in the northeastern corner of the country, just miles from the Moldovan border. In all honesty, I didn't even know it existed prior to coming here. It's the type of place that is easily overlooked on a map, surrounded by more familiar names that are more widely promoted by the Western media. What the media won't tell you is of the history of this incredible medieval city, within easy reach of Budapest, Bucharest, and Odessa. As Romania's second largest city (who knew?!), the city exudes an urban pulse equivalent to most major European cities, but also retains its historical legacies, most notably in the form of its impressive Palace of Culture.

A walk down it's verdant, garden-lined main boulevard will bring you past historic monasteries, orthodox cathedrals, and one of the most stunning opera houses in Europe before bringing you to its magnum opus. The Palace of Culture stands tall at the center of the city, a brooding edifice that began as the Royal Court during the medieval Moldavian era, and later used by the communists as a Court of Justice.

During my short visit to Iasi (which I chose completely on a whim - check out my last vlog for how and why I arrived here!), I had a great time exploring this laid back city, which was far more modern, comfortable, and vibrant than anything I'd ever imagined. It's cheap, cheerful, has loads of history and charm, and has laid back vibes - what more can you ask for? I only wish I'd discovered it sooner.
