Ashwal's talent quickly caught the eye of scouts and coaches. He made his debut for the Indian national team in 2012. He has since represented India at numerous international tournaments, including the Asian Volleyball Championship, the FIVB Volleyball World Cup, and the South Asian Games.

Despite his success, Rai has faced his fair share of hardships throughout his career. In 2017, he suffered a serious knee injury that kept him out of action for several months. However, he made a strong comeback and was back to his best in 2019.
