Road, utility crews ready to roll into action if weather disrupts Thanksgiving

With fierce winds and lake effect snow in the forecast for Thanksgiving Day in Western New York, state Department of Transportation crews spent Wednesday gearing up.

At the DOT's western Monroe County facility in Ogden, 19 snowplows were lined up and ready to go.

Darrell Fazio, the facility's assistant resident engineer, said the roads will have 24/7 coverage.

"Trucks are being calibrated back by the salt barn right now to make sure our distribution's proper," Fazio said. "It's just typical. We're ready for the snow."

AAA projects 73 million people will travel by car during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Clare Adams is one of them.

"Last year was insane," she said. "I'm hoping this year is a little bit better with the snow."

Adams is heading to the Adirondacks to meet her family for Thanksgiving.

"My parents growing up always kind of instilled in us to be safe, especially around holiday seasons," she said. "The day before Thanksgiving is a huge going-out night in the area, so I think just being vigilant on the road, making sure to be as safe as you can."

Rochester Gas & Electric will have extra crews ready to go if the weather brings disruption to service, according to Alexis Arnold, RG&E's senior communications manager.
