July 31st, 1970, Elvis's Vegas opening night at International Hotel, 2,000 people gave immediate standing ovation when he walked on stage, but Elvis stopped them saying "sit down, I haven't earned this applause, you're applauding for walking onto stage, showing up isn't an achievement, I want your standing ovation because I gave you performance worth standing for not because my name is Elvis Presley." Elvis performed intensely for 90 minutes telling audience "I spent last ten years making bad movies, but showing up and doing minimum isn't same as giving people something worth remembering," with entire crowd remaining seated through show per Elvis's request. After singing "Can't Help Falling in Love" on stool, Elvis said "now if you feel I've earned it you may stand," with all 2,000 people rising simultaneously in louder applause than beginning because "this time it meant something, this time it was earned." Elvis continued practice entire Vegas residency, always stopping unearned opening ovations saying "let me earn it first," creating legend where attendees told others "don't stand when he comes out, wait until end, you'll want to stand then," with Frank Sinatra saying "Elvis reminded everyone applause should mean something, we've gotten lazy accepting praise for just showing up."
