I started working on this pretty much the day I posted the Flower Revamp with Toro and holyyyyyy shhhh it took me nearly 2 months. There's a different version on my instagram (which I haven't used in 4 years but revived last month). There was a bit of concern around the opening scene including Emira performing a Salah (Islamic prayer) while music is playing and it started a big debate in the comments of the WIP. A majority of Muslim viewers encouraged me to keep it, but I caved and animated a second version without it anyway. Anyway, here's the story:
In 811AD, Emira is sent on a journey at the behest of his God to explore and archive every culture + religion he encounters. He begins in Southern Africa and ventures North towards West Asia. (He has a short stint in North America due to getting tricked by a djinn and teleported to a whole other continent). Emira approaches all people with love and curiosity, but as we all know, history is filled with atrocities. Now, a core rule in Emira's religion is to never harm another living being with malice. There are no exceptions to this rule. On top of that, his God has forbid him from intervening with mass events. It's like wildlife photography rules: you document but even if the cute bunnies are getting hunted by wolves, you can't do anything to help them. This is why Emira is decapitated, and with the loss of his head go the memories he had with it. His memory is completely reset. But no matter how many times he's executed and reset for trying to save people, he always ends up trying to find a way to help anyway. Maybe someday he'll actually be ble to.
