Pontyberem Railway Walk and Mine Relics

Join us on a walk along the old abandoned railway from Pontyberem to Ponthenry. We discovered some old relics from two mines along the way although we didn't know much about them at the time. The first site was Pentremawr Colliery, which was worked from 1870 until some time in the 1960's. There were some terrible accidents which resulted in the deaths of some of the workers there. The second site where there was more left to see is Ponthenry which became known as one of the most dangerous mines in the UK due to the high number of explosions. It was worked from 1865 - 1936 when it was closed despite a large amount of coal remaining underground as it was deemed too dangerous. More info can be found using this link:
