Growing up with a twin sister should have been like having a lifelong ally, someone to share every triumph and challenge. But for me, it was more like living in the shadow of someone who was always in the spotlight. From the beginning, it was clear who was the golden child and who wasn't.
My sister, Mattie, was everything my parents wanted in a child. Studious, serious about the future, and a mirror image of their own aspirations. I, on the other hand, was the other twin. The one who preferred climbing trees to reading books, who'd rather throw a soccer ball than sit through another piano lesson from as early as I can remember. My parents made no secret of their differing expectations for us.
