Hyperbole: The Greatest Literary Device--ever

Hyperbole is a literary device that uses exaggeration to make a point. Here is an example: the dodgers pitcher must have been throwing 800 mph yesterday because we couldn’t hit him. This statement is hyperbole because nobody can throw a baseball 800 mph--it is clearly an exaggeration. However, this hyperbolic statement (or exaggeration) does make the point that the dodgers pitcher was throwing the ball hard.

Your mission is to listen to the dialogue and identify the hyperboles (or exaggerations) that you hear. Let’s begin.

“Dude, yesterday I played the best video game in the history of the world”

What game is that?

“Dude, no game in the universe can rival it.”

I get it, I get. What game?

Dude, the whole world is playing this game--it’s so lit.

“For the millionth time, what game are you talking about?

I am talking about Among us

“You still like that game? Dude that game is ancient history—so 2020.

“Dude, cry me a river. I get it, you think Roblox is the coolest thing in the history of video games. But you should play among us again. It’s making a comeback.

“Dude, I’m drowning in homework. And I have a ton of chores to do..

“Bruh, You are not “drowning” in homework. We take the same classes. We have one paper due--that’s it.”

That paper is taking me forever, bruh.. The teacher wants a bazillion pages.

“Dude, you are making a mountain out of a molehill. Just relax, play some among us--and do your paper later.”

“Bruh, you are the worst friend in the world, you know that? I haven’t slept in months, I am so stressed...and you want me to play a video game.”

“Exactly, you need to relax.”

Yeah, you are probably right. I haven’t relaxed since the Stone Age.

Yup.. Now let’s play some among us.

Sounds good. But first, let’s get some grub.
I am so hungry I could eat a horse.

Now you’re talking.
