Behind the Scenes of Show Boat! (The Movie That Made My Family Lose Universal Studios)

My family started Universal Studios, and I make videos about their work and legacy. About two years ago I made a video telling the story of how my family lost Universal Studios. There's a lot to it, but pretty much all of it revolves around the movie Show Boat.

Show Boat was a Universal musical released in 1936, based on the novel by Edna Ferber. The film follows Magnolia Hawkes on her family's show boat, where she takes over as leading lady when another actress, Julie, and her husband are forced to leave when it's found out Julie is part Black and her husband is white.

Show Boat has a star-studded cast with Irene Dunne, Paul Robeson, Allan Jones, Helen Morgan, Sammy White, Charles Winninger, and Hattie McDaniel. It was directed by James Whale, the very same director who made Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, and the Invisible Man!

Junior Laemmle really believed in this movie when he decided to make it, and it turns out he was right! Just too bad he wasn't able to see it through.
