Kenyan Authorities Catch Smugglers with Hundreds of Rare Ants | Firstpost Africa | N18G

Kenya has caught four people, two Belgian teenagers, a Vietnamese citizen, and a Kenyan trying to smuggle nearly 5,000 live queen ants out of the country. These rare ants, called Messor cephalotes, were packed in over 2,200 small containers like test tubes and syringes, carefully designed to keep them alive for weeks. The smugglers were planning to sell them to insect collectors abroad, where each queen ant can fetch over $130. Authorities say this case shows a new trend: wildlife traffickers are now targeting smaller species like ants, not just big animals. All four suspects have pleaded guilty and will be sentenced soon.
