History Of Barrow-In-Furness
This 13 minute film was made in 2017 after the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Devonshire Dock and The Port of Barrow in 1867.
This is its first showing.
It looks at the long history of Lower Furness over thousands of years. It takes the story up to the 1860s when the arrival of the railway, the building of the docks and the discovery of huge iron ore deposits had transformed Barrow into an iron, steel and shipbuilding boom town.
Romantic poet William Wordsworth made visits to rural Lower Furness throughout his life and wrote about Piel Island and Furness Abbey in his poetry.
