Good old cold wars days. Gotta ask yourself if you would dare launch such a politically "ahem" incorrect game in these modern days & then realise that we are actually never stopped & is worse than ever. All that aside, Green Beret for the amstrad is fairly harmless and early attempt to bring the "Rush'N'Attack" arcade game into your home . Being early days it does suffer from trying to do too much in at once. Like having ingame music is definately not something you see in many amstrad games. The game has always been getting a lot of flag because of the in hindsight "bad scrooling", movement & overall animation. All true, but it was what we had at the time and when you compare it to previous generation of z80 games that usually required you to have ungodly pixelperfect reflexes or started you off with 20 lives .. then Green Beret is a fairly average romp as its easy to duck the enemies & extra lives is given quite generously thruout the whole game. Infact it really only get genuine tough on level 4 because of the large open mortar covered areas .. and nothing you cant beat if you just a grain of patience.
Anyways, about the playthru, i do wish to apologize for quality of the gameplay as im really rusty in there. Like i forgot i had a grenade left (doh) and foolishly wait for the blue guy to spawn for minutes (and he obviously wont when i still have a nade left, lol). Also i tried to avoid "cheating" or "exploiting" the game mechanics as little as possible as i know both the "only 3 enemies on screen at any time" trick & also the "jump and the riflemen dont decend ladders" trick & probably lot other ones that is stuck in the "reflex" part of my brain.
Odd scrolling & heavy controls aside, you gotta love the sparkly range of enemies that actually behave differently in different situations, something that is rarely seen in other games. Also nice to actually see a boss at the end of each level. Actually has a proper mode 0 loading screen even it being the laziest ever & the game does have a ending as well.
All in all, perhaps not Imagine's finest hour but definalely not their worst.
