This past Friday, the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) held a conference on developing a comprehensive semiconductor ecosystem in Tainan by harnessing the power of AI. During the event, ITRI unveiled a new industrial blueprint for Southern Taiwan that is driven by the twin engines of AI and semiconductors, through which Tainan’s chip industry will be further strengthened.
In recent years, Tainan has been moving away from traditional industries into semiconductors. Propelled by surging demand from AI technologies, industrial players across the value chain are setting up shop in Tainan, turning the southern city into a new chip hub. To build on the momentum, ITRI hosted a forum to identify a new industrial strategy for Southern Taiwan.
Jeff Lin
ITRI Vice President
We hope to launch an accelerator for compound semiconductors. We also hope to build a virtual industrial zone to bolster our entire semiconductor ecosystem, which will include compound semiconductors as well as advanced packaging, which is already solidly established in the south.
Experts at forum discussed how to capitalize on Tainan’s established semiconductor supply chain by leveraging cutting-edge AI technologies. They proposed introducing AI into production processes to ameliorate systemic challenges such as manpower shortage. With AI, new opportunities could be created for Southern Taiwan.
Lee Tzong-ming
ITRI Senior Vice President
Textile, fitting, and all types of agriculture and fish farming industries are all facing difficulties such as manpower shortage and power challenges. And for all that AI can deliver effective solutions.
Ye Ze-shan
Tainan deputy mayor
Whether it’s 5G or 6G internet or communications, or even AI SaaS, in fact they’re all developing quickly at Shalun Smart Green Energy Science City.
The Tainan forum centered on the four application domains under ITRI’s 2035 Technology Strategy & Roadmap, namely, smart living, quality health, sustainable environment and resilient society. They are supported by “intelligentization enabling technologies” such as AI, information security, semiconductors, 5G communications and smart sensing, which in turn creates demands for smart applications and create higher added value to bolster industrial competitiveness.
