The passage emphasizes the importance of cultivating *inner awareness and self-observation* as a foundational practice in life, particularly in Buddhist practice.
Inner Observation and Wisdom:
The *wisdom of awareness* (觉察的智慧) is primarily an inward-looking practice, focusing on one's own mind and emotions. It has nothing to do with others; it is solely about observing oneself. When you encounter any situation, the first step should always be to observe your own reactions and thoughts. This is crucial because it aligns with the correct order of practice in Buddhism.
The Root of Suffering:
Many of the sufferings we experience arise from a fundamental error in how we operate in life. The passage points out that our *biggest mistake* is that when something happens, we immediately look outward and judge others—whether they are right or wrong. This external focus is a *serious mistake* because it keeps us trapped in the cycle of suffering, described metaphorically as being "constantly in the flames" (常在燃烧中).
If you continue with this **external orientation**, your chances of developing true mindfulness (正念) are slim. This is because you're always seeking external validation or blaming others, which means you'll never cultivate the internal strength needed for deep spiritual growth. At best, you might become a morally good person, but you'll never evolve into a true practitioner or a "spiritual person" (道人).
The Buddha's Teaching:
According to the Buddha's teachings, the correct way to approach life and its challenges is to *first turn inward**. When something happens, your initial response should be **self-observation* (内观). Specifically, you should observe whether your own defilements or mental disturbances (烦恼) are being activated. This is a key aspect of the *wisdom of emptiness* (空观的智慧), which involves emptying out the ego and self-centeredness.
By focusing inward and calming your own internal disturbances, you create the right foundation for any external action. Only after you have *adjusted yourself internally* (内调) can you extend genuine compassion and assistance to others. This inward practice gives you the capacity to *help and guide others* effectively.
Conclusion:
The first and most important step in any situation is **self-awareness**. By observing and calming your own inner turmoil, you begin to embody the wisdom of emptiness. This practice is essential for personal transformation and is a prerequisite for being able to truly assist others. Without this inner work, any external action will be superficial and may even reinforce your own suffering.
