Khalifa White sings "I Got Love" from Purlie!
Purlie debuted on March 15, 1970! It ran for nearly two years, netting eight Tony nominations, including Best Musical, and two wins, for Best Actor and Best Featured Actress. Set in the Jim Crow South, this musical comedy’s importance was due to the era it was recreating, and in many ways, still overcoming. It got audiences rooting for Black protagonists' adventure while undergoing the tensions and hardships of their time. If you want to see Purlie yourself, you're in luck - a revival of Purlie Victorious, the play that the musical is based on, is expecting a return to Broadway this Summer, directed by Kenny Leon and starring co-producer, Leslie Odom Jr.
This performance is a part of Make Them Hear You, a series that pays homage to and celebrates the sweet, soulful sounds of Black musicals! Featuring Black artists from Broadway, Off-Broadway, and beyond, this show explores the music and history of those who came before us.
