District Attorney George Brauchler and Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly have filed a lawsuit against Colorado Governor Jared Polis, challenging the constitutionality of a state law governing the certification of federally issued U-Visas.
U-Visas are a tool used by local law enforcement and prosecutors to grant temporary legal status to non-citizen crime victims and witnesses who agree to assist in the investigation and prosecution of crimes.
The lawsuit argues that the Colorado legislature has unlawfully restricted the authority of prosecutors and law enforcement agencies to certify U-Visa applications, interfering with their ability to enforce the law and protect public safety.
