The Falls Road district is the most important center of the Republican community in the city.
A predominantly working-class community, the Falls Road district has always had a strong socialist tradition and before the 1970s it was an area of less nationalist presence than other areas in Northern Ireland.
Between 3 and 5 July 1970 Falls Road was the focus of a violent battle between British soldiers and the IRA.
Four Catholic civilians were killed.
This episode appears to have led many Irish / Catholic Nationalists to take sides against the British Army and created enormous support for the IRA.
For the next three decades, the British Army maintained a constant presence on Falls Road with a base on the top floors of the Divis Tower.
Post removed only in August 2005 following the peace accords.
Nonetheless, Falls Road and the Protestant neighborhood of Shankill are still divided by a wall, called the "Peace Wall".
