im so happy to share this one with all my heart. Although, this plate was made with rush, I GOT A PERFECT SCORE! AAAAAAHCK!

PLATE 5: Dimensional Sculpture using Planar Materials

Throughout the art process of this plate, I became more ambitious about what my sculpture would mean. I want it to speak for itself and in this time of our situation - this pandemic.

In this plate, I decided to choose cardboard as my main planar material. I really like how how thick it already is and its given texture. I didn’t take advantage of the fluting of my cardboard to use as a roof because I think it won’t give the whole sculpture it’s uniform texture. And since I’m working on in a kind-of-like a diorama, the proportion for each house must have its different ratio of roofs. So, I kept the walls and roof the same texture and tied together with a rough coat of white paint to give an overall unified aesthetic. I originally took the inspiration from Harry Potter's The Burrow of The Weasleys. The whole first inspiration was very detailed and may not tap the right criteria, so I decided to expand the scape and simplified the structure. Instead, I created a (sort of a) compound of different kinds of houses, representing the different social classes, then towering from each other.
For months, our home became our training ground. Our office, gym, school, workplace, and our only space to keep living and to continue what we’d normally do outside. This pandemic blurred our boundaries. Some may call it their safe space, but I want them to also know, not all inside their houses are safe. Some may be mad saying “God, why don’t you m*******ckers stay at home?! Stay at home! Don’t you guys get it?!” an Instagram influencer once said. But what they don’t realize, is it’s a different story for Filipinos who live a hand-to-mouth existence. Can’t they see? Not everyone can stay long at home. Not everyone can Netflix and chill because boredom isn’t a gut issue for them. Not everyone can pause their work because some are workers who only get paid on a daily basis. Not everyone has a house to stay safe from the virus. Not everyone can work from home to feed the mouths of their family. Not everyone may die because of the virus, instead, out of hunger. Now, how then can these people “just stay at home?” Not only this pandemic shed light on how corrupted our system is, but it also showed those who can’t clearly see with their own bubble of privilege. It doesn’t mean we’re asking for them to empathize, but rather to sympathize, to understand the struggle and suffering of others, and acknowledge our different circumstances.

I purposely didn’t aim for accurate proportions of houses from one another, they are intentionally “distorted” because literally, not all homes are equal, and not all families are given equal opportunity in this society. I also didn’t even try to polish the coating, not even a neat finish of the paint. To me, this does not require perfection, it’s just an illusion. In short, I intentionally did not make this piece to be perfectly clean. Not because I can’t, but instead, I want all these flaws to contribute to the greater message that I hope this piece resonate with you. No certain and only explanation – it’s open for all interpretations. But only if this art piece could talk and ask the person looking at it, I want it to say, “Can you see the people below you?”
