The 1981 Colt Trooper MK III is a double-action revolver, part of Colt’s MK III series introduced in 1969 and produced until 1983. Built on the J-frame, it featured a redesigned lock mechanism with a transfer-bar safety system and coil springs, making it safer and less labor-intensive to manufacture than earlier models. Chambered primarily in .357 Magnum, it also supported .38 Special, .22 LR, and .22 WMR, with barrel lengths of 4, 6, or 8 inches. The 1981 model often came in a high-polish blue, bright nickel, or “Coltguard” electroless nickel finish, with checkered walnut grips. Known as the “working man’s Python,” it offered reliability, accuracy (averaging 2.1–2.5-inch groups at range), and durability at a more affordable price than the premium Python. Its adjustable sights and smooth trigger pull made it ideal for self-defense, target shooting, and law enforcement use. Production ceased in 1986, but it remains a valued collectible.
