In this video, we explore ontology — the study of being and existence — through the rich and diverse traditions of Islamic thought. Ontology raises essential questions: What truly exists? What is the nature of existence? And how does existence relate to essence?
We examine four major Islamic schools of ontological thought:
🌟 The Philosophical School, shaped by Greek influences and Muslim thinkers like Al-Farabi and Ibn Rushd, which emphasizes the primacy of existence
🌠 The Illuminationist School, founded by Shahab al-Din Suhrawardi, which centers on essence and uses divine light as a metaphor for being
🕊️ The Sufi or Mystical School, which views all beings as emanations of the divine essence, transcending hierarchies of existence
📜 The Theological School (mutakallimun), which initially resisted metaphysical inquiry but gradually integrated it into Islamic theology
