The Ayodhya Ram Mandir is a monumental Hindu temple located in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, built at the site traditionally recognized as the Ram Janmabhoomi (the birthplace of Lord Rama).
Following a landmark 2019 Supreme Court of India verdict, the temple was inaugurated on January 22, 2024, with the Pran Pratishtha (consecration) of the idol of Ram Lalla (the infant form of Rama).
Architectural Highlights
Designed by the famous Sompura family (led by Chandrakant Sompura), the temple is a masterpiece of traditional Indian engineering and spirituality.
Style: Constructed in the Nagara style of North Indian temple architecture.
Dimensions: The temple is approximately 380 feet long, 250 feet wide, and 161 feet high.
Structure: It is a three-story building, with each floor standing 20 feet tall. It features 392 pillars and 44 doors.
No Steel or Iron: To ensure a lifespan of over 1,000 years, no iron or steel was used in the construction. Instead, it relies on high-grade stones (Pink Sandstone from Rajasthan), granite, and a unique "lock and key" mechanism.
The Mandaps: There are five distinct halls (Mandaps):
Nritya Mandap (Dance hall)
Rang Mandap (Color hall)
Sabha Mandap (Assembly hall)
Prarthana Mandap (Prayer hall)
Kirtan Mandap (Devotional singing hall)
Key Features & Spiritual Elements
Ram Lalla Idol: The main sanctum (Garbhagriha) houses a 51-inch black stone idol of five-year-old Ram Lalla, carved by sculptor Arun Yogiraj.
Surya Tilak: On the festival of Ram Navami, a specialized mirror-and-lens system directs a beam of sunlight to form a "Tilak" on the forehead of the idol.
Surrounding Shrines: The complex includes smaller temples dedicated to Sun God (Surya), Goddess Bhagwati, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Shiva.
Time Capsule: A time capsule was reportedly placed 2,000 feet below the temple to preserve its history and identity for future generations.
Current Status (Late 2025)
As of late 2025, the temple complex has reached its final stage of completion:
Full Completion: While the ground floor was opened in early 2024, the entire complex, including the upper floors and surrounding "Parkota" (outer wall), was officially completed by November 25, 2025, marked by the hoisting of the Dharma Dhwaja (sacred flag) by Prime Minister Modi.
Expansion Plans: The Trust recently announced plans for a new memorial to honor those involved in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement and additional infrastructure to handle the massive surge of pilgrims, which has exceeded 100 million visitors annually.
