Reforming:‎
Conversion of straight chain hydrocarbons into branched chain hydrocarbons by heating in the absence of ‎oxygen and in the presence of a catalyst.‎
Purpose:‎
‎ * The gasoline fraction of petrol is not of good quality, which causes knocking.‎
‎ * When this petrol burns in an automobile engine, combustion can be initiated before the spark plug fires, ‎producing a sharp metallic sound called knocking.‎
‎ * It greatly reduces the efficiency of the engine.‎
‎ * Reforming can increase the octane number of fuel, which is of good quality.‎
‎ * Experiments show that iso-octane or 2,2,4-trimethylpentane has an octane number of almost 100.‎
‎ * It can be done by using a small amount of tetraethyl lead (TEL), (C₂H₅)₄Pb, which is an efficient anti-‎knocking agent.‎
TEL's Disadvantage:‎
It produces Lead Oxide when burned in the engine and causes air pollution.‎
