They say that skiing is a rich man's sport and they ain't kidding. Fortunately for me, I grew up a half an hour from a decent little bunny hill in western New York, where it was super cheap to learn as a kid and as an adult who makes his living as a musician. I've looked into a few cool gigs in some epic ski towns like Jackson, Wyoming, Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Stowe, Vermont, Bretton Woods, New Hampshire.
You get the picture. And I've always gotten the lift ticket included as part of my compensation, and I've always managed to find a hookup on a decent set of used gear. And I'm going to estimate that over the last 15 years that I've spent in total, less than what a single Ikon pass goes for these days, and I've actually skied quite a bit.
So regardless of whether I could afford it or not, when my siblings floated the idea of a family ski trip to somewhere in Utah this spring, I decided that Deb and Willow and myself were all in. Unfortunately, my sister Lizzie got a decent hookup on a place to stay in Park City, and my sister Colleen and her both have Ikon passes that include a family discount and I have a credit card and a life to live.
But enough about me rationalizing about spending money I don't have to do something fun. I needed the diversion. I needed a nice meal at a place I've never done that before. I needed to spend time with family and friends, and maybe more than anything, I needed to forget my life for a while. Forget about work. Or the lack thereof. Hell, maybe I even needed to forget who I am.
