The Cammino di San Benedetto (The way of St. Benedict) is a 300km hike in central Italy linking three of the most important places associated with Saint Benedict: it begins in Norcia where he was born; passes through Subiaco where he founded his first monastic house and the trail ends at the great abbey of Montecassino, where he wrote his rule, laying out the form that monasticism takes to this day.
It begins in Umbria, but soon crosses the border into Lazio, where it remains for the rest of the hike.
Day 14 of the Cammino di San Benedetto between Casamari. and Arpino was once again all about the road walking. It felt a little bit like a filler day, that is, just a way of getting you from point A to point. B. That said, there were still long stretches of beautiful hiking and the magical experience of Isola del Liri.
This small town built on an island, instead of a central piazza, has a magnificent waterfall and river forming the heart of the place. It was a perfect place to stop and enjoy a bite to eat and a gelato, a very welcome and refreshing treat in the heat of the day
Once again, despite the roads, it was still a wonderful day of hiking in Central Italy.
