The new Audi A5 Saloon is not what it seems

The Audi A5 is a replacement for the hugely popular A4, its name change a result of a short-lived effort by the German car-maker to update its model naming strategy. What's more, while the car tested by Chris Knapman in this CarGurus UK review is called the A5 Saloon, it is in fact a hatchback.

Combine all this with the fact it is available with a now-unfashionable diesel engine, and you surely have a recipe for a complete muddle of a car. And yet, as we discover in this review, the new Audi A5 is actually rather wonderful.
