Thendral Urangiya Pothum, Petra Maganai Vitra Annai (1958)

Thendral Urangiya Pothum is a classic Tamil romantic duet from the 1958 film Petra Maganai Vitra Annai, sung by A. M. Rajah and P. Susheela. Composed in the Abheri Raga by Viswanathan–Ramamoorthy, the song is a poetic exploration of love, longing, and the sleeplessness that accompanies deep affection.

Thendral Urangiya Pothum translates to "Even when the breeze has gone to sleep". The core theme is that while the rest of the world (the breeze, the moon, and nature) may rest, the eyes of lovers remain wide awake, fuelled by their mutual desire and connection.

The opening lines, "Thendral Urangiya Podhum, Thingal Urangiya Podhum, Kangal Urangidumaa... Kaadhal Kangal Urangidumaa," ask: "Even if the breeze sleeps, even if the moon sleeps, will our eyes sleep? Will the eyes of love ever sleep?"

The phrase "Ondru Kalandhidum Nenjam, Uravai Naadi Kenjum" describes two hearts merging into one, begging for a deep, lifelong relationship.

The lyrics compare the beloved to a young maiden appearing like the moon in the blue night sky ("Neela Iravile Thondrum Nilavai Polave").

The song suggests that love cannot grow without honest conversation ("Nesamaaga Pesidaamal, Paasam Valarumaa") and that true happiness blooms only through affectionate physical and emotional closeness ("Aasai Theera Konjidaamal, Inbam Malarumaa").

The second verse speaks of millions of happy dreams dancing in the "sky of the heart" ("Idhaya Vaanile Inba Kanavu Kodi"). It uses the metaphor of a skylark (Vaanambaadi) and the relationship between a flower and its honey to illustrate how the couple should live together without hesitation.
