When you hear polyester, you might think of bell bottoms and disco—but in the art world, polyester took on a very different form in the 20th century: alkyd resins. This video explores the surprising origins and artistic evolution of alkyds, a type of polyester polymer that transformed oil painting techniques starting in the 1970s.
Originally developed for industrial use in the early 1900s, alkyds became a game-changing addition to artists’ studios thanks to innovators like Arthur DeCosta, who created Turco Classic—a modern, safer alternative to traditional megilps. We also highlight the role of Winsor & Newton, whose development of Liquin helped popularize alkyds in fine art.
