Second Green Revolution? Wheat & Rice May No Longer Need Urea | Explained

A breakthrough discovery published in Nature suggests that cereal crops like wheat, rice and maize may one day fix nitrogen from the air, just like legumes. Scientists achieved this by making a tiny change in a receptor protein, allowing cereals to accept nitrogen-fixing bacteria.

If scaled successfully, this could drastically reduce urea use, cut fertiliser subsidies, lower pollution, and improve climate resilience for Indian farmers. With wheat and rice forming the backbone of India’s food security, the discovery raises a big question — are we on the brink of a Second Green Revolution?
