Xu Shi Xi describes 4 basic types of Baguazhang stepping methods. These are not all of the stepping methods but rather 4 basic methods outside of the common 趟泥步 Mud Wading Step. The include: 自然步 Natural Stepping， 措步 Rubbing Step， 勾拉步 Hooking Pulling Step，蹬踏步 Dēng Tà Step (kicking with the bottom of the foot and then pressing with the toes). Xu would often say that Hooking Pulling stepping is what Mud stepping is supposed to be when done correctly but he considered much of the martial application seen in much of the way Mud stepping was performed by people to be lost due to practicing it incorrectly and therefore never developing skills from the practice and then writing it off as useless as many often do.
