Discovering Singapore’s North: Gin Thye Cake Maker and Other Hidden Heritage Gems

What stories do we find when we head up North of Singapore and take time to listen?

In this episode of During My Time SG (DMTSG), we spent some time at Gin Thye Cake Maker, a heritage brand with deep roots in traditional Chinese pastries and ceremonial cakes. We listened to their stories, learned about their craft, and felt the heart behind a business that has served communities for generations.

We also visited Shin Choon Hin Home Furnishings and Jaya Spices, where we had simple conversations and a look around, discovering small glimpses of the everyday trades that keep neighbourhoods alive. Many of these store owners are in their 60s and beyond, still showing up with quiet dedication.

DMTSG is a community project celebrating Singapore’s elderly-run heritage businesses. Through mindful conversations, unfiltered visuals, and community connection, we keep their living heritage alive.
