Iron Duke Kenworth Restoration Ep.5 Hate'n on Daytons

Now that I’m back from the Lesco truck show, which was a blast, its time to get back to work on the Duke. First off, I wanted to move it to a better location to strip it down and prep for sandblasting. Once in place and put on blocks, I proceeded to start removing the old Dayton wheels, sometimes referred to as Chicago Wobblers. Now I’ve always called them wagon wheels and was never a really big fan as these were not typically seen on the fancier trucks back in the day. I agree now they look kinda old school cool and are tough as nails (you can haul way more with a steel Dayton than an aluminum budd) but I’ve always preferred the look of a polished 24.5 which is the plan for this truck. However, once I started tackling these I quickly became convinced I will never use them again as they were so rusted together it took me most of the day just to get 4 wheels off the spider hubs … I broke two sledgehammers and had to beat on the so bad I can barely lift my arms. I know the Duke in the movie had Daytons but these are the smaller 22.5’s and after what I went through I’m convinced that installing larger aluminum wheels is the way to go. Plus this is going to be more of a “Tribute” truck, where I plan to put my own spin on it verses an exact movie replica like I’m doing on #ProjectSnowman.
