Lighthouses were the inspiration for this week’s show and have also become a metaphor for companies that are leading the future in technology deployment.
Lighthouses have a storied history that dates back to ancient times. One of the most famous early lighthouses was the Pharos of Alexandria, Egypt, constructed in the third century BCE. In one of its first acts after its formation in 1789, the US government assumed control of all aids to navigation in the country.
Today’s modern lighthouses have also evolved. Smaller LEDs have replaced the huge lights that beamed out warnings in the dark of night. Lighthouses are becoming more energy efficient, incorporating renewable energy and provide a platform for ocean research.
On today’s show, host Dr. Katherine Johnson explores the fascinating history and the remarkable future of lighthouses. She was also discuss the evolution of lighting technologies as the focus has shifted to “smart lighting systems.”
