While on patrol in the Vaquita Refuge, the crew of the Seahorse found two dead totoaba floating on the surface, one with the swimbladder removed by poachers. These swim bladders sell on the black market for $15,000-$30,000 per kilo. The nets used to catch the totoaba are the same nets that are destroying the Vaquita Porpoise population.
The other abandoned, uncut totoaba is evidence that the pressure being applied by the partnership of Sea Shepherd and the Mexican Navy is forcing poachers to cut and run, thus reducing the illegal fishing occurring in the Zero Tolerance Area. In 2022, we saw a 79% reduction and illegal fishing activity, and we will remain laser-focused on the only goal that matters; a total elimination of threats to the Vaquita.
